Certifications

– Robert Waid, Columbia Chimney Services

The FIRE Certification program is the most advanced educational program within the hearth industry. FIRE Certified Inspectors complete three advanced-level educational courses. The certification program includes detailed instructions on the inspection and investigation of fireplaces, chimneys, vented appliances, and vent-free products. This program includes, but is not limited to, applicable building codes, manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and fire technology.

The goal for all FIRE Certified Inspectors is to prevent property damage and personal injury. We intend to reduce the number of structure fires that result in millions of dollars of property loss and personal injury every year.

To stay on top of ever-changing products, standards, and building codes, FIRE Certified Inspectors are required to re-certify every three years and are required to attend additional continuing education programs. There are only five individuals in the state of Maryland that currently hold this advanced certification and less than 250 in the United States.

The CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep® credential is the hallmark of excellence among chimney and venting service professionals. The CSIA has the only nationally recognized certification program for the chimney and venting service industry. Professionals who have earned the CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep credential have demonstrated their commitment to their industry and fire and chimney safety. CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps must pass an extensive examination on national codes and standards and demonstrate knowledge of the evaluation and maintenance of chimney venting systems. The CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep credential must be renewed every three years by retesting and submitting documentation of continuing education units. Click here for more info about the Chimney Safety Institute of America.

The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) is a non-profit, educational organization dedicated to chimney and venting system safety. CSIA is committed to the elimination of residential chimney fires, carbon monoxide intrusion, and other chimney-related hazards that result in the loss of lives and property. To achieve these goals, CSIA devotes its resources to educating the public, chimney and venting professionals, and other fire prevention specialists about the prevention and correction of chimney and venting system hazards.

The NFI Certified Master Hearth Professional certification demonstrates a proven knowledge of factory-built fireplaces, fireplace inserts, wood stoves, and chimneys. The NFI Certified Gas Specialist certification demonstrates a proven knowledge of gas fireplaces, log sets, and stoves, as well as their venting systems. To obtain NFI Certification, an individual must pass a rigorous examination of the fundamentals of each hearth specialty. The subject area includes essential topics such as combustion theory, fuel comparisons, safety code regulations, appliance design, and sizing.

The National Fireplace Institute® (NFI) is the professional certification division of the HPB Education Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization for the hearth industry. NFI’s objective is to increase public safety by establishing meaningful credentials for professionals involved in planning and installing residential hearth appliance and venting systems.

Chimney Professionals that are CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician® (CDET) certified are tested on building codes, NFPA 211, NFPA 54 standards, and all facets of cleaning and examining residential and commercial dryer exhaust systems. CSIA Certified Dryer Exhaust Technician® (CDET) program is administered by the Chimney Safety Institute of America. The examination evaluates a Dryer Exhaust Technician’s understanding of the basic information technicians must master to become competent dryer exhaust safety and fire prevention specialists.

Testimonials

Our wonderful customers are the reason we’re in business. Here are some of the great things they’ve said about us recently.

“From scheduling to service, a professional experience I would gladly repeat. Punctual and fast, the crew arrived on time and were exceptional. What was probably most astounding was the extraordinary care they took in making sure the inside of the house was clean.”

“The folks at Columbia Chimney Sweep did an excellent job. Not only were considerate of the hardwood floors and furnishings while cleaning both of our fireplaces, Rob Waid did an excellent job of answering my 1001 questions and explaining exactly what they were seeing and what it meant when they did the inspections. He spent the time while he had the camera equipment inside the chimney to show me exactly was going on inside my chimney – it turns out the chimney liner for one of the fireplaces was severely damaged – explaining (likely) why it happened, and going over the repair options. He even provided some alternative that would work out better for my family and I. Since my wife and I were already discussing having the family room remodeled, that last was especially helpful. When were ready to move forward on that project, we’ll be talking with Rob and Columbia Chimney Sweep about replacing the fireplace with a wood burning stove.”
